The Hong Kong Institute of CPAs' 2013 Best Corporate Governance Disclosure Awards (“the Awards”) was brought to a successful conclusion with the presentation ceremony held at a luncheon in the JW Marriott Hotel on 2 December 2013.

The guest of honour, the chairman of Securities and Futures Commission ("SFC"), Mr. Carlson Tong, addressed the audience before presenting the awards to the winners. In his speech, Mr. Tong referred to the benefits that good corporate governance brings to the health of the capital market. In this regard, he emphasised the importance of tone at the top in driving the culture of individual organisations. He also praised the Institute for the excellent job it has done in promoting good corporate governance and its achievements in raising the quality and standard of the accounting profession.

Ms. Susanna Chiu, president of the Institute and chairman of the judging panel, Mr. Kim Man Wong, council member and chairman of the Professional Accountants in Business Leadership Panel, and Mr. Patrick Rozario, chairman of the Awards organising committee, spoke on the need for high standards of governance in both the private and public sectors in Hong Kong, the progress that has been achieved in this area since the Awards first started and on the role and reputation of the Awards programme. They highlighted some of key features and developments of the Awards in 2013, including the growing importance of the sustainability and social responsibility ("SSR") reporting award, which was introduced in 2011. They expressed appreciation of the invaluable work carried by the judges, reviewers and the support staff in ensuring the success of the Awards.

The results of the 2013 Awards were announced at a media briefing on 29 November 2013 conducted by Susanna Chiu and Patrick Rozario. The speakers reported on the overall standard of the entries, identified examples of the positive corporate governance practices of the winning companies and organisations, as well as areas for further improvement in Hong Kong’s corporate governance standards. They also outlined recent developments in corporate governance locally and internationally.

The Institute was pleased to be able to announce a number of first-time winners this year. The corporate governance disclosures and practices of all the winners represent benchmarks of good practice amongst listed companies of different sizes, as well as public sector organisations in Hong Kong.
